The Walt Disney Company announced today that it is making its second major content purchase in three years, buying Marvel Entertainment, Inc. for $4 billion in stock and cash. Previously in 2006 it bought Pixar Animation Studios for $7.4 billion in stock. The combination of these companies opens a number of possibilities including Pixar producing computer animated Marvel comic movies. However for now Marvel is working to produce live action movies and its distribution deal with Paramount Pictures for five upcoming films including Iron Man 2 and 3, and Thor will remain intact. On an even more exclusive basic Sony has the rights to make Spider-man movies and 20th Century Fox rights to the “X-Men,” “Fantastic Four,” “Silver Surfer” and “Daredevil” franchises.
