Wired Magazine On 23AndMe

Wired Magazine has an article on the new biotech start-up 23AndMe which will provide a partial decoding or your genetic code for a $1,000 fee. Co-founded by Anne Wojcicki (wife of Google co-founded Sergey Brin) and Linda Avery the company can scan your DNA for several hundred thousand telltale markers and from them offer information on which diseases and conditions are associated with your genes, for example prostate cancer.

There are of course numerous ethical and personal questions related this mapping, which will expand when a full mapping of one’s DNA becomes economical. For example will insurance companies demand a complete mapping before offering coverage or will the police search the DNA mappings looking to match DNA found at crime scenes.

For a worst case of what knowing (or maybe not knowing) your DNA can lead to see the Hugo Award for Short Story of the Year Finalist, “The Hand You're Dealt” by multiple award winning Canadian SF author Robert J. Sawyer in which a man’s visit goes to a “soothsayer” – a genetics’ counsellor leads to murder after he discovers a horrible truth about his genetic code.
