Windows XP: 5 Years Later

With it’s fifth anniversary approaching the Washington Post’s Personal Tech Columnist Rob Pegoraro looks back on five years of Windows XP and how hindsight shows what actions Microsoft should have taken before introducing item. Pegoraro believes that Microsoft did not include enough controls when building Windows XP. He cites allowing unsigned drivers that impact stability to be used, and software installers that can write to any part of the OS, and most importantly having all users run under an all powerful “administrator” account that can control the entire operating system.

But to be fair Pegoraro notes that he didn’t even mention security when he reviewed Windows XP five years ago.
